I am delighted to serve B-C Grammar School No. 1 students, faculty, staff, and administrators as the school library media specialist! This is my sixth year at B-C Grammar, my twenty-ninth in Lexington School District 2, and my thirty-second in the state of South Carolina. I am originally from Virginia, where I grew up and attended school. I obtained my undergraduate degree in English and elementary education from Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia, my master's degree in library science from the University of South Carolina, and my masters plus 30 degree also from USC.
I have two children, Jennifer and Jonathan, who are both products of Lexington 2 schools, having attended Springdale Elementary, Fulmer Middle, and Airport High, and both having earned degrees from the University of South Carolina. Jennifer is two courses from having her MBA degree and Jonathan is pursuing a degree in nuclear medicine.
My philosophy of teaching can best be summed up with a quote from Cynthia Rylant, “Read to them. Take their breath away. Read with the same feeling in your throat as when you first see the ocean after driving hours and hours to get there. Close the final page of the book with the same reverence you feel when you kiss your sleeping child at night. Be quiet. Don’t talk the experience to death. Shut up and let these kids feel and think. Teach your children to be moved."
The mission of the B-C Grammar School No. 1 library media center is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to explore the world through a variety of resources and to help all students become independent life-long readers and users of information.
